hey everyone and welcome back to the blues effect. Today i have an article from osh (xyertreyx) discussing a team up with secret society and runaways for deck that would just simply make u just want to runaway! Enjoy:
yerTrey here with another installment of…”Gee wiz kid, I hate your decks!”.
Currently I can’t seem to make a one teamed deck that one of my fellow Hobby Leaguers hasn’t come up with already. So instead, I am going to break down a team that everyone seems to love, and combine them with a deck that everyone seems to hate. The Runaways have a very good theme to them. Making people put cards into the KO pile seems extremely wrong, which is why most people don’t like playing against Secret Society KO abuse.
“Well gee, why don’t you just mix those two teams and call it a day?”…….You say the word ‘gee’ too much for me kid…….get away…
Basically both teams have way too much synergy with its own team. I honestly think that if they made every character on the Runaways rare and moved them down one drop, leaving the 7 where it is, then it would have been extremely easy to mix them with the Society. Still, I try to make life easy on that person that is just sitting at the table with these cards out and a needle in his arm trying to make things fit together. Its alright, I have been through my share of needles……
Let’s look over the basic curves of both teams.
SECRET SOCIETY
1 chemo
1 riddler
1 dr.polaris
2 dr.sivana
2 charaxes
3 poison ivy
4 gorilla grodd
5 black manta
6 mr.freeze
6 death stroke
7 blockbuster
RUNAWAYS
1 gertrude
2 alex wilder
2 chase stein
3 victor mancha
4 nico minoru
5 xavin
6 molly hayes
7 old lace
Now as you can see, you have a lot of difficulty choosing which character you want to play on turns 2, 3, 4, and maybe even 5. Yes we all know that Black Manta is a must in a deck that keeps putting cards in the KO pile, but tell me exactly how many Black Mantas do you have? Yeah I thought so.
Obviously Old Lace is the win condition, and if you get evens you can drop Blockbuster as a huge wall then look at your opponent as he waste everything he as because he doesn’t intend on setting a resource on turn 8 since he ran out of cards in his deck on turn 5. Let’s go drop by drop..
CURVE BREAK DOWN
On 1, if you choose to play the standard 7 one drops that this deck seems to always run, that means you are DEFINENTLY running Poison Ivy on turn 3. Of course Riddler is the main choice at turn 1, and Chemo is just ridiculous if they have no cards to replace into. Not to mention that if you play Death of a Dream with him then blow him up, you have the potential to make them go down 3 resources. Gertrude seeks out your 7 drop….-_-…..yyyeeeeaaahhh Society wins this drop.
On turn 2, you have Dr. Silvana and Alex Wilder. You pretty much have two characters that do the same thing, but Wilder has a larger pay out. Charaxes is obvious. A free character that you can KO with Grodd for two extra cards. You can also have him do a little damage if need be or KO his ass for an extra Agility. Charaxes makes the cut, and depending on your playing style, so does Wilder, and Silvana makes for a great back up.
On 3, you hit a brick wall. Turn 3 determines whether you are playing mostly Society or mostly Runaways. If you throw in Poison Ivy, you are going to be playing all those one drops, mostly just trying to get in multiple copies of Riddler. I’ve played against a deck where he had 3 Riddler’s on the field on turn 4. I was a very sad man. Although, lets say you drop Riddler on 1, Wilder on 2, and Ivy on 3 with a Riddler in the KO pile. This means 5 potential cards on turn 5 with possibly two different plot twist cost locked down. Yeah, that hurts a little. Also, if this happens, your opponent won’t be playing many plot twist so Nico might not be as useful as Grodd. Honestly, you are muling theirs but you need to get your own. This is why Grodd would be great on turn 4 with Ivy on turn 3. (Great transition sentence huh?)
On 4, depending on who you dropped on 3, Grodd would be the best choice. Grodd allows you to KO that tapped Riddler in order to bring him back with Ivy so he can get the 6th card of the turn from your deck. Yea, it hurts that bad. Now let’s say you didn’t get that set up of Ivy and Riddlers. Let’s say you got the combo of Chase Stein and Victor Mancha. This means that you are attacking and they can play as many plot twist as they wish. You have to deter them from all out killing you so you drop Nico. Now you play every defensive pump you can while making their deck thinner and thinner. If they have a few cards left, say 10 or less, start replacing resources. This helps because not only are you playing a plot twist to mul two, you are replacing for a total of 3 cards out of the deck. Not to mention the KO cards that Society has, so really you should be able to deck them out with this deck by turn 4. I’m not even talking about a god draw here. I’ll go over what I think is a god draw for this deck a little later.
On 5………..Black Manta. The only reason NOT to play Black Manta is because you don’t have him. If you don’t, and can’t “borrow” one from a friend, then you can run Xavin who gives you choices of what you want to do. Although, I honestly think that this turn you should be protecting your 4 and 3 drops…whoever they might be.
On 6, if you have odd inish, you obviously want to drop Mr. Freeze so you can have a better chance of causing break through on turn 7. This also makes your opponent reluctant to attack, sense he/she knows what is coming out on turn 7. If not, you can drop Deathstroke and defense out. They don’t have any cards in their deck by now so statistically speaking they shouldn’t have too many pumps either. Stun the lowest drop with Charaxes and the next lowest with Deathstroke, leaving the 6 drop alone and allowing him to get KOed at the end of the turn. Also, as soon as you deck them out, start blowing up resources so they might not even make it to turn 6, let alone 7.
On 7, if you have the inish….Old Lace for the win. If not, Blockbuster can make life very difficult, and honestly by that time they should be low enough on endurance where you can just beat the crap out of them for the win.
On 8….whoops…sorry…I have a heavy stall mind set….
As you can see, depending on your drops…it changes EVERY ASPECT OF THE GAME AND HOW YOU PLAY. You have to actually think with this deck. If you are like my writing counter part, (Mr. Blue himself), you don’t like to think much and would much rather attack for 46 in one turn for the win. If you are like my other writing counter part, (Mr. Redyst), then you have already made this deck and are play testing it against the shift swarm.
I personally love to think but get frustrated around turns 6 and 7. So I have another idea with them that I might write about later. I have a test coming up soon.
Now, as I promised…god draw.
Opening hand:
1 Riddler (putting another Riddler into the KO pile)
1 Wilder
1 Poison Ivy
1 Team-Up
2 Agility
Next draw
STTG
Runaways, Run Away!
Everything else falls into place.
I didn’t put any plot twist or anything because it’s obvious. There aren’t too many cards that would be on the fence, you are either in or you’re out.
Join me next time as I write about _______ and how it is just TOO brokenly Janktastic how mostly __ and __ drops can ______ everyone up to turn 8 without Shift.
*whisper*- If you build it, they will come…..and lose….
P.S.- With decks like this out there, I hate that they aren’t making DC sets anymore. Let’s all cry a river and build a bridge that DC can cross. Somebody call Batman and get him started on this!!
